First move: Choose one charged memory, write the scene, then add the adult mind reflecting on why it still matters.

I want to publish creative work

Purpose: Move readers through imagination, voice, structure, surprise, and emotional truth.

Likely genres and forms: Literary fiction, mystery, romance, fantasy, science fiction, horror, poetry, drama.

First move: Name the reader promise of the genre, read three examples, and draft one scene where something changes.

I want to argue or explain

Purpose: Help readers understand an issue, change their mind, or take useful action.

Likely genres and forms: Op-ed, essay, explainer, civic writing, academic paper, professional report.

First move: Write one sentence that names the claim, the audience, the stakes, and the evidence you can actually support.

I want funding or support

Purpose: Persuade a decision-maker that a need is real and a plan is credible.

Likely genres and forms: Grant proposal, need statement, project narrative, budget narrative, letter of inquiry.

First move: Define the community need, the measurable outcome, the people served, the timeline, and why your plan fits the funder.

I want to write for work

Purpose: Make information useful, decisions easier, and responsibilities clear.

Likely genres and forms: Email, memo, policy, report, announcement, procedure, newsletter, public information.

First move: Put the ask or main point in the first screen, then organize the rest by what the reader must do next.
